I noticed this phenomenon where completing an internship in a job industry “traps” the job-seeker in that industry as it becomes easier for him or her to apply for future internships/jobs in that industry. I certainly experienced this myself: armed with work experience in the special needs/mental health industries, I was applying to a brand marketing internship when the interviewer asked me why I wanted to join marketing when I was interested in “humanitarian” work!
However, this was just a hunch and I needed hard, solid data. I stumbled upon this fantastic Linkedin dataset on Kaggle and decided to have a go at analysing it. I looked at the correlation between internship industries and current job industries. Result: I was pleasantly surprised by how much my preconception was challenged!
Please let me know if you have any ideas for other interesting areas to analyse for this/similar datasets!
